Breast Feeding and Blogging

As of September 19th, this mobile milk truck nursing station has been on the move throughout Pittsburgh. Jill Miller an art instructor designed and created this truck. She works at Carnegie Mellon University and decided to take a stance on the importance of having friendly attitudes about breastfeeding when so many in this area do not readily accept breastfeeding. According to TIME, the city council just deemed September 13th as Milk Truck day.

The location of the milk truck can be found on their Website or facebook page . Needless to say women have been blogging a bunch about this truck, and breast feeding in general.

Our own Joshua West and others worked together and published an article entitled "Breastfeeding and Blogging: Exploring the Utility of Blogs to Promote Breastfeeding". This article can be found in the American Journal of Health Education Volume 42, No. 2, published in the March/April 2011 issue. They performed research to find answers as to what extent breastfeeding behavior support was being communicated on and through blogs. The findings suggest that behavior support is being given through blogs, and comments on blogs. The most effective blogs, in affecting behavior change, were those blogs with industry affiliation potentially because of the assumed credibility of information and anonymity provided. Blogging seemed to be effective in communicating support, largely due to the immediacy of correspondence and feedback that was also based on personal experience. The blogs and comments on blog posts could be easily accessed through mobile devices as well as personal computers. Partnerships between health educators and health-industry blogs could be a key link in the promotion of health behavior change, especially in encouraging women to and continue to breastfeed.
